Unethical Competition

Competition, competition, competition. It’s everywhere you go these days, even in the workplace. Sure, healthy competition can get us fired up and motivated to perform our best, but it’s not all sunshine and clear skies. We have all seen some people who take things a bit too far, engaging in tactics that are, as they say, “shadier than a palm tree on a sunny day”.

That’s why competition must be ethical and here it comes in. It’s like regular competition, but with integrity and mutual benefit thrown in for the right purpose and good measure. When everyone’s playing fair and rooting for each other, it can lead to an environment that’s both productive and innovative.

On the other hand, unfair competition is like a bad episode of the ‘Real Housewives’ [Those who don’t know, it’s an American Reality TV show started in 2006]. People distorting truth, spreading rumours, hiding behind hypocrisy, taking credit for other people’s work, and acting like they are so busy! This kind of toxic behaviour leads to toxic environment and can really bring down morale or hinder any productivity gains.

Someone must play a vital role in creating a culture of ethical competition. They can provide clear guidelines for promotions and feedback, and encourage teamwork and communication. As for colleagues, they should focus on their own performance and avoid trying to sabotage others. It’s all about personal growth and mutual respect.

Who should this ‘Someone‘ be?

Ethical competition can lead to some amazing things. With a little teamwork, a positive attitude, and a healthy dose of humour (okay, maybe not that last one), we can create a workplace that’s both productive and fun.

How can we build a better work environment?

A question that needs all leaders to explore!
