Another 7 Lessons From Kellerman*

‘Bad Leadership’

What is a ‘bad leadership? How can we identify it? What is the importance of identifying and stopping bad leadership? Here are 7 simplified lessons from “Bad Leadership” by Barbra Kellerman.

👉 1. 😔 Identify It: this is the first step towards addressing bad leadership. Leaders must recognise where things are going poorly and why. For example, an organisation may have noticed a decline in employee morale and productivity due to management decisions or sometimes indecision!

👉 2. 🛑 Stop Tolerating It: Leaders should not tolerate bad leadership within organisations. If managers are known for micromanaging or being abusive to employees, or misbehaving they must be held accountable. Toxic environment kills talents.

👉 3. 💡 Develop Leadership Criteria: Leaders should have criteria for what they believe makes a good leader, and these criteria should be based on both hard and soft skills. An organisation may prioritise having a leader who is both knowledgeable about the industry and empathetic towards employees. A good balance is always good.

👉 4. 📊 Measure Leadership: Leaders should measure their own and others’ leadership effectiveness to identify areas of weakness. We may use employee engagement surveys to measure leadership effectiveness. Provide training and coaching where and when necessary. Don’t we always say “Our people are our assets”?. Let’s prove it!.

👉 5. 🌟 Encourage Self-awareness: Leaders must be self-aware and open to feedback in order to improve leadership. They may have a mentor or a coach who provides constructive criticism and helps them improve. This will help them improve others.

👉 6. 👥 Build a Diverse Team: Leaders should build diverse teams that bring different experiences and perspectives to the table. Don’t surround yourself with blind followers!

👉 7. 🚀 Continuously Improve: Leaders must continuously improve their own leadership skills and provide opportunities for others to do the same. For example, an organisation may hold leadership development training or provide opportunities for employees to attend conferences or seminars. Don’t we always say “Our people are our assets”?. So, let’s prove it!.

Avoid “Bad Leadership“, but read the book.
