Why CRM is Overlooked?

It is not news that Crew Resource Management (CRM) is an essential aspect of flight safety. CRM aims to improve team communication, decision-making, and situational awareness in the aviation industry. However, despite its proven effectiveness, some airlines still do not pay adequate attention to CRM and its implementation.

This lack of emphasis on CRM can have unwanted consequences.

Many airlines prioritise regulatory technical training CRM though it’s in the regulations too. This perception is mostly observed in airlines where hierarchy is more valued.

Moreover, CRM training can be seen as a resource-intensive process and may become complacent to invest and improve it, especially during budget constraints. However, investing in CRM can lead to significant financial savings by reducing incidents and avoiding costly accidents.

There are many real-life scenario where the lack of CRM training contributed to tragic aviation accident. Many accident investigations concluded that the pilots’ inability to communicate and coordinate effectively may have lead to loss of of situational awareness or loss of control etc, and contributed to the accidents.

Airlines should focus on building a positive safety culture that values CRM skills such as teamwork, communication, and foster a real non-punitive approach to error reporting.

CRM is a vital aspect of flight safety that cannot be ignored by airlines. The aviation industry continually improves safety by improving training including CRM and implementing updated procedures. This is to ensure that all crew members understand and adopt the best practices that promote safety culture in the aviation industry.
