‘Guidance Material for Improving Pilot Monitoring‘

The IATA Guidance Material for Improving Flight Crew Monitoring, published in 2016, provides recommendations to airlines on improving the performance of their flight crews through monitoring essential operational information. Here are 10 lessons from the IATA Guidance Material
👉🏻 Effective Monitoring is Critical for Flight Safety : this is like being a goalkeeper, constantly scanning the field and anticipating threats to protect your team.
👉🏻Communication & Cooperation: Communication & cooperation are key. Crew are working together to create harmonious work rhythm that reflects each member’s knowledge, skills and attitude (KSA). Just like a music band!
👉🏻 Task Management is a Team Effort: Task management depends on KSA too. Look at what is what, what is right, NOT who is who or who is right.
👉🏻 Decision-Making Must Consider All Relevant Information: Are you a good detective? Decision-making is like being a detective, gathering and analysing all the clues and evidence to solve a case. Be a good detective!
👉🏻 Familiarity Breeds Complacency: Familiarity breeding complacency. This is one of enemies for pilots. Sometimes becoming distracted or less attentive to the surroundings because of over-familiarity. Be careful of “home syndrome”.
👉🏻 Training Should Emphasise Effective Monitoring Skills: Training should focus on constantly absorbing and practicing new knowledge and skills to become better at it.
👉🏻 Continuous Improvement: Continuous improvement is necessary and it’s like being a rocket, always seeking to reach new heights and overcome obstacles. Who should help you here?
👉🏻 Use of Technology Should Enhance Monitoring 💻: just like a scientist, we should use advanced tools and techniques to observe and measure phenomena that are difficult to detect with the naked eye. Is your airline/operator up to it?
👉🏻 Distractions & Overload ☠️: Distractions and overload can impair monitoring skills. We should avoid errors and manage threats. A good juggler 🤡can keep all the balls in the air when one is thrown unexpectedly or many are thrown at once 🤔.
👉🏻 Proper Rest & Recovery: Proper rest and recovery are essential for efficient monitoring is like being a battery, requiring periods of rest and recharging to maintain peak performance. Get well rested !
