Thunderstorms: Stay Away

Thunderstorms (TS) can be very dangerous for commercial aircrafts regardless of their sizes. It’s very important to understand their characteristics and how to avoid them while flying.

Characteristics:

  • Strong updrafts & downdrafts
  • Heavy rain, hail, and lightning strikes
  • Strong turbulence
  • Potential windshear

Avoidance:

– Check weather forecasts and radar imagery to plan the best route to avoid thunderstorms.

  • Get familiar with weather briefings where and when provided.
  • Adjust your altitude to avoid storms as they can extend very high into the sky.
  • Avoid flying over areas where thunderstorms are developing or moving.
  • Keep a safe distance from thunderstorms by at least Nautical Miles.
  • Some air traffic controllers have radar imagery services. They alway can be of help and support you to adjust course as necessary.
  • Maintain a slower airspeed and reduce altitude gradually to lessen any effects of turbulence. Airplane manufacturers have set a specific speed for turbulence penetration.
  • Use the onboard weather radar to help identify and avoid thunderstorms ahead.

It is important to understand the dangers of thunderstorms and take all necessary precautions to avoid them. While flying, commercial pilots need to constantly monitor weather conditions to keep the aircraft and passengers safe. By properly planning and adjusting the course while in air, pilots can minimise the risk of encountering thunderstorms and turbulence.

Safe flying!
