Evidence-Based Training (EBT)

How Evident & How Effective !

Evidence-based_training (EBT) for pilots is an approach that aims to increase flight safety and efficiency in aviation by using scientific evidence to design and evaluate training programs. This approach recognises that training should be based on research evidence that demonstrates the most effective and efficient ways to improve the pilot performance.

The traditional approach to pilot training has relied on a one-size-fits-all approach, where pilots are trained using the same curriculum and methods regardless of their experience level, background or the task demands. This approach often fails to address the unique needs of individual pilots, and can result in a training experience that may be inefficient, ineffective or even counterproductive.

EBT, on the other hand, is an approach that continuously gathers and analyses data to identify the factors that impact pilot performance, and uses this information to design customised training programs that address the unique needs of the operator, region and individual pilots. This approach takes into account the latest researches and best practices in the field of aviation education and human factors.

In evidence-based training, pilots are assessed using a range of tools including simulations, performance metrics, feedback, and debriefing sessions. These assessments of the core competencies enable trainers to identify pilot strengths and weaknesses, and to re-design training interventions that target specific areas of improvement. This approach, when implemented well, should results in more resilience and efficient training.

One of the primary benefits of EBT is that it helps to mitigate human factors that can contribute to accidents in aviation. Human factors are the psychological, social and organisational factors that impact human performance in complex systems such as aviation. By mitigating human factors in training, EBT can help pilots to develop the skills and knowledge they need to perform tasks more effectively and reliably, reducing the risk of accidents.

EBT can improve pilot performance by addressing the gaps in traditional training methods and aims to identify these gaps and address them through targeted training interventions that incorporate the latest research and best practices.

For those airlines implementing EBT;

  • How are you conducting your research and acquire best practices?
  • How do you analyse your data and how you compare them to the industry standard?
  • How do you standardise you scenario-based training if you have different fleet types and generations?
  • What are the lessons learnt so far?
